Cleaning up the Kafue River, Zambia
by kunal-2
The Kafue River is one of Zambia's most significant and longest rivers, stretching over 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles) through the country. It is a major tributary of the Zambezi River, which it feeds into. The Kafue River is especially important for its role in providing water, agriculture, and hydroelectric power to the region.

As has been reported, the river has recently been subject to an environmental catastrophe.
On 18 February 2025, a tailings dam belonging to a copper mine operated by Sino-Metals Leach Zambia collapsed in the Copperbelt Province, causing 50 million liters of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to enter a tributary of the Kafue River and prompting a shutdown of the water supply in Kitwe.
Open CampaignFunds are needed to repair the damage on the river, as well as to ensure Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) strengthens its enforcement of natural protection in future.
This campaign is an open campaign under which Incub8 will hold funds for disbursement against validated project proposals.
Note from FounderAs a previous VSO in Chipata, Zambia (on the border with Malawi) as well as a PFM Expert as part of an EU funded team supporting the National Assembly of Zambia (NAZ) to support the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) , designed to provide analysis to help the MPs hold the Government and its agencies (including ZEMA) to account, the founder is distressed to see such avoidable damage. The loss to local communities, rural incomes, biodiversity is devastating.
